Japan is our mother country.
(日本は私たちの母国である ―― countryは補語)
Wheat production marked a new record.
(小麦の生産は新記録を樹立した ―― recordは目的語)
He keptus waiting so long.
(彼は私たちを長いこと待たせた ―― usは目的語、waitingは補語)
(3) 目的語
一般に、動詞の表す動作の働きを受ける語を目的語といいます。たとえば、He brokethe
glass in pieces.(彼はそのコップを粉々に壊した)の文で、brokeという動作の対象になっているものはthe
glassです。
このように「~を・・・する」(動詞+(代)名詞)という形の文で、「~を」に相当する語を目的語といい、目的語をとる動詞を他動詞といいます。なお、目的語をとらない動詞は自動詞と呼ばれます。
In Japan, we get bonuses twice a year.
(日本では年2回ボーナスをもらう〔が出る〕)
Our firm isone of the medium and small enterprises.
(当社は中小企業の一つである)
の文で、主語はOur firm、動詞はisですが、Our firm is ___. だけでは、当社がどんなものかわかりません。one
of the medium and small enterprisesを補ってはじめて文の意味が完成します。
このように___の部分を補って文が完成する語を補語といい、補語を必要とする動詞を不完全動詞といいます。詳しくは、「第3章 主要文型」を参照してください。

・動詞を修飾するもの

・目的語を修飾するもの
I have nothingto do today. (私は今日は何もすることがない)
・補語を修飾するもの
He is sure to make you verypleased.
(彼ならきっと君を大いに楽しませてくれるだろう)
・他の修飾語句を修飾するもの
That’s a veryeasy matter for me. (そんなことは僕には朝めし前だ)
・文全体を修飾するもの Frankly, I disagree with your proposal.
(率直に言って、私はあなたの提案には反対です) To tell the truth, his report was better than I expected.
(実を言うと、彼の報告は私の予期以上の出来であった)
Oh! The meeting has already started. (あ~ぁ、会はもう始まっている)
How do you do, Mr. Smith? (はじめましてスミスさん)
Their ideas are, on the whole, very interesting.
(彼らのアイディアは全体的見てとてもおもしろい)
The book, although it was written many years ago, is still readable.
(その本は何年も昔に書かれたものだが、まだ読むに値する)
